Kettering, Ohio (April 15) ­ Dr. Benjamin Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, will be the keynote speaker at the commencement ceremonies for Kettering College of Medical Arts on Saturday, April 30. Dr. Carson is also nationally known for his encouragement of early childhood reading and academic excellence among inner-city youth. The event will be held at the Dayton Convention Center, starting at 8 p.m., and is open to the public.

“Dr. Carson is an inspiration. His life story and his professional success are gifts from God, and he will energize us all,” said Dr. Charles Scriven, president of Kettering College.

The director of the division of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins since 1984, Dr. Carson is a professor of neurosurgery, plastic surgery, oncology and pediatrics, and he is the co-director of the Johns Hopkins Craniofacial Center. He is probably best known for his successes in separating conjoined twins.

Dr. Carson also is renowned for his inspirational look at the philosophy that helped him overcome life's obstacles and his prescription for success -- self-discipline, good character, and implementing one’s own success for the benefit of others.

Dr. Carson has written over 90 neurosurgical publications. He has been awarded 24 honorary degrees and dozens of national citations of merit, and he is the author of three best-selling books, Gifted Hands, Think Big, and The Big Picture.
