A group of senior respiratory care students spent the week of June 16-23 volunteering as counselors at Champ Camp.
Champ Camp is held each year at Recreation Unlimited in Ashley, Ohio, for children ages 6 to 18 who are dependent on mechanical ventilators.
This year, Kettering College sent the largest group of student volunteers—Christa Butcher, April Dunn, Kiann Ferguson, Sara Retherford, and Dawn Wooley. Our students, along with the rest of the camp staff, provided a valuable service that allowed children with tracheostomies and those requiring technological and ventilator assistance to participate in a summer overnight camping experience. Throughout the week, the respiratory care students participated with the children in typical camp activities including canoeing, horseback riding, climbing a 40-foot alpine tower, fishing, swimming, recreational games, creative arts, outdoor living skills, pontoon boating, and nature and stream studies.
“This was the most exhausting and exciting week,” said Sara Retherford ’07. “We had a chance to help kids that normally have many limitations achieve a normal week in a camp atmosphere, and with the help of the volunteers, each camper could participate in exciting and fun activities.”
