Respiratory Care
ASSOCIATE'S AND BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAMS
Breathe easy with comprehensive knowledge
THE CAREER
Respiratory care is one of the most rapidly growing and challenging specialty areas in the allied health sciences. Its primary purpose is to aid the physician in the diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with lung and/or heart disease.
Respiratory care practitioners, known informally as RCPs, are in great demand in the fast-paced, high- technology world of health care, and there are numerous job opportunities in clinical practice, department management, hospital administration, medical equipment manufacturing, health insurance companies, and educational institutions.
THE PROGRAM
The respiratory care program prepares students to function with intelligence, skill, and responsibility. Following successful completion of the second year, students receive an associate’s degree and are eligible for credentialing examinations offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
The associate’s degree program prepares graduates as competent advanced respiratory care practitioners. Completion of the Bachelor of Science in Health Professions degree provides advanced skills, knowledge, and values that expand the therapist’s role in the health care system.
CLINICAL EDUCATION
The practical application of respiratory care is learned through planned clinical experiences. Each semester, the respiratory care student will be required to complete clinical rotations at various hospitals throughout the community. The final summer term provides full-time experience in various aspects of respiratory care. In cooperation with the director of clinical education, students may choose a local hospital or a hospital anywhere in the United States.
EXTENDED CURRICULUM
A student wishing to take respiratory care in an extended program of study may do so by distributing the first two years of course work over a three-year period. Contact the department office for information.
ACCREDITATION
Kettering College of Medical Arts is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, approved by the Seventh-day Adventist Board of Regents and authorized by the Ohio Board of Regents. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon recommendation by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.
