Medical Sonography
ASSOCIATE'S AND BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAMS
Promoting good health today prevents treatment tomorrow
SEEING IS BELIEVING
Medical sonography (ultrasound) uses high-frequency sound waves to create a diagnostic image. The clinical portion of the program includes orientation to the clinical aspects of medical sonography, demonstration of sonographic equipment, and opportunity to participate in actual sonographic procedures. Studies include instruction in abdominal, vascular, gynecology/obstetrics, and echocardiography specialties.
Students must complete prerequisite course work (year 1) prior to submitting an application to the sonography program. Once the student is accepted, the first year in sonography (year 2) will provide experiences in abdominal and vascular technology; the second year in sonography (year 3) will provide experiences in gynecology/obstetrics and echocardiography. Upon successful completion of the second year in sonography (year 3), students will receive the associate’s degree and be eligible for credentialing examinations. Completion of the Bachelor of Science in Health Professions degree with a major in medical sonography (optional year 4) provides additional experience in sonography, as well as advanced skills, knowledge, and values that expand the sonographer’s role in the health care system.
